Introduction

In 2005 in Ohio there was a group of kids riding a raft going on a boy scout mission and then infected with a deadly almost unstoppable single celled organism. These creatures are known as… amoebas. Amoeba are organisms that are made to survive as a cell.

Functions of a Amoeba

Amoebas are really cool creatures. However, for amoebas their function is to survive as an organism and to survive you need to reproduce. The way that amoebas reproduce is using a method called binary fission. Binary fission is the process of the nuclei (“Discovery Ed”) splitting in half and forcing the cytoplasm to pull away and those are daughter cells that grow back and reproduce again shown below.
This diagram is showing the amoeba using binary fission to reproduce.

Structures of a Amoeba

Amoebas have a very interesting way of eating food. What they do is they find some food in the water and go to it. But, the amoeba has to have a way to move through the water. And they do it by sucking water into the water vacuoles like a sponge then spitting it out at high speeds. Throwing the water out of the water vacuoles and forcing it in the opposite direction of the food or even the host that it plans to take over.(Discovery Ed) Another example of a structure that the amoeba has, are pseudopods, also known as false feet. Their function is to trap and shove the food into the food vacuoles and consume it as a nutrient. They are not how the amoebas move.

Effect of Amoeba's on Human's
Amoebas are very dangerous as shown in this quote. It’s hard to wrap your head around,” Joseph says. “They gave her a one percent chance of survival.”(Discovery Ed)This shows that the amoeba can kill very easily. On the other hand, there is a medicine that you can take called Miltefosine. What it does is send some amoeba killing germs in the nose(where the amoebas enter) and fights it off but sometimes doesn’t work.

Conclusion

Overall, the amoebas function is to survive, the amoeba has some unique parts, and is very dangerous for humans even with miltefosine. So, try not to swim in lakes expressly get water in your nose. Or you might get sick.
